Biography
Rogelio Martinez is an award winning playwright whose plays have been developed and presented at many theaters across the country. Most recently the Denver Center Theater Co. premiered his new play When Tang Met Laika. Other theaters that have developed and presented his work include the Public Theater, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Mark Taper Forum, South Coast Repertory, Marin Theater Company, Primary Stages, Atlantic Theater Co. and the Magic Theater. Mr. Martinez is an alumnus of New Dramatists. During his time at New Dramatists he was the recipient of a Princess Grace Award and the Joe Calloway Award. His one act play, Union City..., starred Rosie Perez and was the winner of the James Hammerstein Award. Mr. Martinez is a recipient of an NEA/TCG Grant and a Sloan Grant (the latter led to the writing and development of When Tang Met Laika at the Denver Center). Mr. Martinez has received commissions from the Atlantic Theater Co., South Coast Repertory, and the Arden Theater Co. He is currently working on a play for the Arden to premiere in April of 2011. Mr. Martinez teaches playwriting at Goddard College and Primary Stages.
