Biography
Matthew López. The Whipping Man recently concluded an extended, sold-out off-Broadway run at Manhattan Theatre Club in a production directed by Doug Hughes and starring Andre Braugher. For it, Mr. Lopez was nominated for the John Gassner Playwrighting Award by the Outer Critics Circle. The play premiered at Luna Stage in Montclair, NJ in 2006 and received subsequent productions at Penumbra Theatre Company, Old Globe and Barrington Stage prior to opening in New York. It is currently scheduled for productions across the country next season. His play Somewhere was initially presented at Summer Play Festival in 2008 and received its World Premiere at the Old Globe in October 2011. He holds new play commissions from Roundabout Theatre Company and the Old Globe, where he is also Artist-in-Residence. Matthew's work has been developed and supported by Ars Nova (Play Group Alum 2009/2010), The Lark Play Development Center, Manhattan Theatre Club, McCarter Theater, The New Group, New York Theatre Workshop (Playwrighting Fellowship 2010/2011), the Old Globe and Roundabout Theatre Company. Other plays include Reverberation and Zoey's Perfect Wedding.
